Surfers' Paradise

We decided that we were going to start the next day with a swim in the sea, so we got up early (well as early as one does on holiday) and walked across the road to the beach. Surfers' does have a very nice beach and, I guess, good surfing conditions. This is really the Miami of Australia and there are a large number of high rise buildings (and many more on the way by the looks of it) that at certain times of the day shade the beach! Anyway the currents were pretty strong that day and the advice from the lifeguards was to only go in the sea up to your knees. After swimming around as best we couls in water that was a foot or two deep we walked over to a cafe just off the beach and had a nice, greasy bacon and egg sandwich.

We went back to the hotel, got ready, checked out and then went for a look around the town. That didn't take too long so we jumped in the car and headed on to Lone Pine koala sanctuary just outside Brisbane. This place is marvellous; the oldest and largest koala sanctuary in the world, apparently. Actually I must confess that whilst the koalas were quite cute, it was the wallabies that I really liked. You can buy a bag of food for 50c and feed the large population of pretty tame (grey) kagaroos and wallabies.

We also saw a Tazmanian devil, ekidnas, wombats, fruit bats and lizards. Cool. Eventually we ran out of roo food and had to leave. We arrived in Brisbane in time to drop the hire car off and then went out for dinner at one of the restaurants in the South Bank area, close to our hotel. The food (at a Turkish place called Ahmet's) was a bit disappointing as the restaurant looked really nice and was the busiest of all of them.

I totally agree with the observation about Ahmets. My boyfriend and i ate there, and it took 2 hours for our food to come out to us.
Hope our visit to Aus was good.
