I have also finished A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson. I have read all of is books now I think and I have enjoyed reading most of them. I thought that this one was a little hard going though, but maybe that was because I was trying to read it at night when I was tired. It covers quite a lot of ground including the big bang, how the planet formed, how we evolved from the primordial soup, Newton, Hooke, Darwin, Einstein etc, etc. A couple of things that struck me were that most of the momentous discoveries discussed in the book were made by ‘amateurs' and many of them got no credit for them for various reasons. Also I think the book does do a nice job of reminding us that we have a long way to go before we understand some really fundamental things. |
